I got referred to your site by Christy's mentioning it on her blog....I wish you a wonderful school year. The best thing about being self-reflective (which it seems you are since you're questioning your abilities and talents), is that you grow and grow and grow. I've been teaching for 14-15 years now and prob. my best classroom tips are to be consistent so they know you mean it no matter what it is, try to have the consequence tie in directly to the issue (oh, you forgot your homework? You can do it now -- during free time, outside time, whatever. You bumped him...go get him an ice pack, ask him if he needs anything else, etc.), keep your voice low and calm, have a regular consistent signal for quieting the group - and then wait (it could be a short clapping pattern that the kids join in on, it could be dimming the lights, and kids who keep talking/messing around....you start lining up only the ones who have been quiet and ready. The others sit for a while and miss whatever's happening next...all in a matter of fact manner). Hope this helps! I go back Monday. So hard to have summer end already.
